The Friendland Gate Museum

The Friedland Gate Museum in Kaliningrad is located in a building bearing the same name. The Friedland Gate used to be a part of the 19th century royal fortifications with a route leading  to the city of Friedland (Prawdinsk, Kaliningrad Oblast). Before The First World War it was possible to enter the city or leave it through the Gate, and since 1920 the Gate has become the entrance to the Yuzhny Park. Between 1950 and 1960 the chambers of the gate were used as a grocery store. In 2002 the Gate started functioning as a museum which in 2008 acquired the status of an independent cultural body.  800 years old, intriguing, multicultural history of the city has been presented at museum exhibitions showing the most important episodes from the times of Teutonic Knights (1255) to the period of the first settlers inhabiting Kaliningrad Oblast after the Second World War.

Every exhibition utilises various techniques and methods of presentation. The space is created by the means of artistic and multimedia tools and the collection of extraordinary collectibles lets us dive into the city’s life from different periods of its development. The Friedland Gate Museum focuses on museum innovations, continues to broaden its exhibition activity and is active at developing the museum education using interactive programs. At present, the museum intensively evolves and participates in grant programmes  and competitions concerning the implementation of cultural and social projects.
